Characters of Violet

A world of characters and references to the past playing their part in this literary science fiction world.

Characters are not listed in the order of appearance in the novel nor their importance to the plot. Each play a unique an invaluable role to the themes, plot, character growth, and arc of history. An affiliation with the Sol Alliance Nexus (SAN) may not be fixed in space and time. Spoilers to the novel are present below.

Violet

Deputy Secretary of State

Overview

Violet is a character who undergoes tremendous change throughout the story, however, as with real change that journey is internal. Violet was born on Luna, with traits unique among humans, to a family that ascribed a purpose and expectations of duty to SAN. The structured life behind academy walls and an image centered on her more-than-human traits never compelled her eyes away from the shell encasing Earth and the mysteries behind it.

Key Events

When young Violet was forced to run across the Terminus. Alone on the surface of Luna and exposed to the vacuum of space she was made to run between two bunkers along the line where night and day meet.

In her youth Violet’s parents enrolled her in the SAN Academy with the course of preparation to ascend to the position of secretary of state.

While conducting a diplomatic to quell the agitators on Mars, Violet flies from Gendai to the moon Deimos in pursuit of her missing father. This is where her lowest moment shatters the heavens.

Traits

Violet is equipped with technological augmentation in her arm and a neural link in her brain tied to Kibou.

Protested at being appointed the Deputy Secretary of State.

Frequently evading SAN monitors and oversight.

Educated in diplomatic affairs and governance matters.

Trained in combat techniques, firearms, and handheld weapons.

Her mother and brother disappeared when she was young.

Violet is human.

Humanity

Humans are not born with naturally purple hair and eyes.

Humans are not able to withstand the vacuum of space or heavy radiation.

Humans are not genetically engineered to be the next stage of evolution.

Kibou

Medic

Overview

Kibou is the most important character in Violet’s story. A long-term friend and partner in life, Kibou brings a counter-balance to the duo. Kibou comes from the GCW on Luna, near the Webb district, and specialized in medicine. Coming from the GCW, her first language is English and grew up in a non-augmented community. Kibou’s studies and career saw her tend to the wounded across SAN, predominantly those in non-augmented communities and the workforce of Mercury and Venus (and their families on Mars).

Key Events

Kibou was trained as medic and practiced medicine for non-augmented populations on Mercury, Venus, and Mars.

Kibou was educated in various philosophies and traditions of thought from Earth.

Traits

Kibou is equipped with a neural link that is tied to Violet.

Kibou is not otherwise augmented by prevalent technology.

Kibou frequently whistles a hymn with a three note melody.

Millennium Man

The Millennium Trust

Overview

The Millennium Man is a feature of the systems upon which the hard science fiction infrastructure in the novel operate. As a leader of the Millennium Trust, he manages the systems that allow humanity to settle the planets and push the boundaries of technology.

Key Events

Takes an active role in the construction of the mega engineering projects that established the infrastructure of SAN.

Arose as a leader of the Millennium Trust. The director the cells within which Violet’s and Kibou’s parents operate.

Responsible for the long-term growth and evolution of humanity.

Traits

His physical form is constructed out of a cloud of nanobots.

His consciousness is distributed across the data system underpinning Earth and SAN.

He is the calm, sagely contrast to Falx.

Toulousour

Admiral, Gallia

Overview

Toulousour is an admiral for Gallia predominantly operating in the Mediterranean Sea. He was the spearhead during the siege of Carthage. As the war across the Mediterranean continues, Toulousour reaches a dire crossroads for who he will become for the world.

Key Events

Toulousour and his mother travel from Mongolia to the Celtic Crescent under the shepherd Falx.

Toulousour joins Gallia’s military as the major powers in Europe descend into war.

Toulousour ascends close to the confidence of the Triumvirate that leads Gallia.

Traits

Dies his hair to coverup the abnormal pigment as part of fitting in to the Gallia military.

Caught up in the confluence of the powers that be on Earth.

Known amongst troops for a direct leadership style.

Konoe

President, SAN

Overview

Kowa Konoe is the elected governor for Luna and by convention acts as the President of SAN. President Konoe’s tenure is punctuated by the crisis on Mars whereby the destruction of amino factories destabilizes the links among planets. When the Secretary of State goes missing he enlists Violet to act as the key emissary to the Kimomo militants. An act that sets off a series of world shaking events.

He sits in the shadow of two prior Presidents Konoe.

Ito

Governor of Mars, SAN

Overview

The Governor of Mars who receives Violet and Kibou in Gendai for the summit with the Kimomo delegation. He professes a staunch adherence to traditions and stability. He is flanked by Lysylia diligently serving as his recently hired chief of staff and key advisor.

Key Events

Served as governor of Mars during a time which saw a general growth of farming and ranching. Although, food supply remained dominated by factories producing amino acids for interplanetary distribution.

Traits

A proponent of Confucian thought, governance, and traditions.

Of Japanese heritage.

Jue

Primarch, SAN

Overview

Jue’s tenure as governor on Mercury endeared him to the non-augmented communities who toil in the hostile world environment, factories, and mines. A brash defender of human labor in these locations and human supremacy over robotic systems, he helped cover the extremes of those peoples. Upon his departure from Mercury he was instrumental in the rise of his successor, Governor Shuiye.

Key Events

Served an extensive tenure as the governor of Mercury.

Arose to the position of primarch within a year prior to the events of Violet.

Traits

A tall and bulky man of an imposing nature.

Operates an intelligence research unit using the authority of the primarch.

Has a perception of opposing terrestrials who end up in SAN.

Of Mongolian heritage.

Yikame

Rear Admiral, SAN

Overview

A key leader of the SAN self-defense forces Yikame is on the front of ensuring human settlements across the solar system have robust protection. However, with SAN’s monopoly on force and arms production the self-defense force that Yikame leads focuses on protecting against asteroids and space junk. Yikame is also a proponent of iterating defenses against perceived threats even if they are not yet to manifest in the eyes of government leaders.

Key Events

Provides insight and guidance to students in the SAN Academy and governing politicians.

Participates in the matsuri celebrating the dawn’s light on Luna by leading taiko drumming.

Traits

An enthusiast of drums, such as the taiko.

An advocate for routine advancement of protective systems and strategies.

Has two sons who also participate in the SAN self-defense forces.

Of Korean heritage.

Narantsetseg

Restaurateur on Luna

Overview

A local restaurateur on Luna near the SAN Academy specializing in Mongolian cuisine.

Key Events

Established a traditional homemade food restaurant on Luna after coming from Earth.

Provides a warm homely environment to Violet when she slips out of the SAN Academy.

Traits

A grandmother and grounding figure for guests, such as Violet.

A recipient of marbled meats allegedly from Earth.

Hard of sight, but keen in smell.

Of Mongolian heritage and known for Mongolian dishes with SAN ingredients.

Lysylia

Chief of Staff, Governor Ito

Overview

A stern and determined professional with direct ties to Kimomo and working as the Chief of Staff for the Governor of Mars. A fierce opponent to Violet’s entry into the fray and determined to stay ahead of Violet’s disruption.

Key Events

Lysylia aligned with Primarch Jue and the Kimomo faction to elevate her role in the SAN government.

Traits

Well read and keen to let others execute her plans.

Resolute and empathetic for those in Kimomo.

Wu Zetian

Empress, Mongolia and China

Overview

A former lowly figure in her youth who navigated the imperial court to ascend to positions of influence and power before gripping the throne in her own name. Although she rules through a universal security state, Empress Wu maintains robust food and mineral reserves to withstand the chaos of Earth’s fractured geopolitics.

Key Events

Holds an audience with Violet as the emissary of SAN during the interplanetary crisis.

Traits

Augmented with cybernetic eyes and metallic hands.

A practitioner of an iron handed approach to ruling her empire.

Her imposing exterior and demeanor betray a frailty inside.

Mars

The Red Frontier

Overview

The prime candidate for human settlement across the solar system. The heart of humanity in space with reliable air to breath and soil to cultivate. Life in space will never be identical to that on Earth, but this may be close enough.

Key Events

Humans conduct extensive geoengineering on Mars to unlock liquid water capacity and attempt to create a substitute to the Earth’s magnetosphere.

SAN corrals the moons of Mars to attempt a novel form of tidal motion within and on Mars.

Settlements on Mars eventually achieve the ability to exist above ground for extended periods of time.

Traits

The hub of food and component nutrient production for SAN.

Top soil is modestly managed compared to pre-settlement Mars.

A vibrant place of mixing old cultures and breaking from Luna’s predominant cultural fusion.

Luna

The Moon

Overview

The center of SAN’s government and infrastructure. The location where human settlement in space first took root with an influx of those departing and fleeing Earth’s degradation. The necessity of mega engineering domes and underground habitation are an ever present symbol of humanity’s fragility when living in the solar system.

Key Events

Luna’s centrality to human settlement efforts led to a unique control over culture, language, and social dynamics.

The discovery of how to cultivate eggplant in a modified lunar regolith opened the door to more complex food production on Luna.

The strength of central government control overcame significant coordination issues that would have confronted mega engineering projects, such as the Node King communication system and Earth shell construction.

Traits

Utilitarian and efficiency underline the governance of Luna.

Japanese culture permeates many features and traditions on Luna, notably with festivals, architecture, city planning, and the commonality of sumo.

As the seat of SAN’s government it biases decisions towards the predominant lifestyles, wants, and needs of Luna.

A focus on technology motivates the path of progress and decision making. Fixation on technology and human evolution produced a culture of technological augmentation acceleration. This fixation contributed to the Thirty Years Crisis.

Earth

The Cradle

Overview

Undergoing a negative feedback cycle of environmental degradation, key decision makers mustered the resources to construct a rehabilitative shell around the planet.

Key Events

States on Earth underwent fragmentation and dissolution as traditional power structures failed to manage the resource constraints imposed by degradation and the construction of the shell.

With metals and minerals extracted from what was on Earth many states revived older construction methods, such as wooden warships.

Traits

Divided from the progress of those in SAN.

Slowly restoring regional and global degradation impacts.

Mercury

Baked by Sol

Overview

The innermost planet oppressed by Sol’s immense radiation on one side and the frigid void of space on the other. This duality presents numerous challenges to resource exploration and mining operations. The humans that need to work in the mines and factories are supplemental to the robotics and automation that can endure and is more ethically replaced.

Key Events

The orbital timing of Mercury and Earth provide a reliable pattern for extractive industries to accelerate the Earth sphere and SAN activities.

As Governor, Jue spent time leaning into the disaffection and disassociation of certain laborers on the planet.

Traits

Dotted by impact craters early resource exploration looked for asteroid remnants in addition to the surface and subsurface abundance.

Resources of interest include, but are not limited to, iron, olivine, carbon, magnesium, and calcium.

Venus

The Morning Star

Overview

Earth’s “sister” planet now provides a costly reservoir of resources relatively near-Earth, when their orbits close in, that exist in both solid and gaseous forms. The race to use Venus prompted iterative engineering challenges and engaging with hostile physics of new planets.

Key Events

SAN exploration and extraction logistics overcome issues with the gaseous environment, toxicity, and pressure.

Factories and production facilities integrate the natural pressure as a starting point for higher-order processes.

Traits

Gases and volcanic activity provide an extant resource supply for breaking down and distilling key gases and minerals.

Resources of interest include, but are not limited to, hydrogen, iron, nickel, titanium, and oxygen.
