Volume I follows Ayala as she begins her journey to discover her place in the political war taking place behind the scenes of Yezo’s parliament. Ayala uncovers her purpose reflected in the pieces of Yezo she meets: allies, enemies, and the people her decisions will affect. Albeit one piece of her political adventure, carrying the weight of her family’s shadow is no simple task as not all allies to her mother are the same to Ayala. Through the chapters in Volume I Ayala introduces and pushes for her landmark legislation: rural revitalization. Rural revitalization is a complex policy dedicated to recovering the vibrancy of Yezo’s towns and villages. Although she picks up this legislation where her mother left off, the institutional powers that be will not take the gloves off for this newcomer.

How do you convey the verbal gut punch that is a well prepared political talking point? ‘Coliseum of Parliament’ is one piece a political adventure and another piece action drama. This political manga draws from the visual storytelling of traditional action and adventure manga to convey the weight of words in the coliseum of politics. Just as the body politic is a manifestation of many constituent pieces, so too is this manga. As story craft, this manga tells the hallmark journey to purpose narrative that is the ‘Tales of the Aeons’ series, but also uses the aforementioned pieces of manga (drama, action, combat, etc.) that frequent readers know to elevate real world-inspired systems, governance, and dynamics to a new genre of manga. Readers will come away more learned without the avalanche of text that would be a real world-faithful representation of the political arena.
